A Different Kind of Fortune

“This is life advice, not a fortune,” said my daughter with disgust. We were at a Chinese Buffet. It was all delicious. At the end of our meal our waiter brought us our bill and 3 fortune cookies. Her fortune said, “To love and be loved is like feeling the sun from both sides.” My husband’s fortune said, “For all the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.” Mine said, “Dispel negativity through creative activities.”

She was right. These were not fortunes. At least not directly. It depends on how you look at them. For me, a person who is looking for creativity in a life full of to do lists, care taking and commitments, I decided to interpret this as a sign that writing about creativity is the correct path.

I’m feeling overwhelmed by all I have to do to get this project started. Then I saw another sign. Literally. I was shopping and saw a wall hanging with a quote from Nelson Mandela. It said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” I interpreted this sign that I just need to do all the small steps – they will add up.

Okay – they aren’t fortunes. They aren’t telling me what was going to happen in my future. But I decided to use them as signs – I will use them to propel me forward, to try new things, and get me past the overwhelm I have going on in my head.
