Using Your Sense to Combat the Dull

Finding time to be and feel creative can be tricky. There are so many things to do in a day. Kids, relationships, family, home maintenance, meals. It’s hard to fit it all in. And usually feeling creative gets shoved to the back behind all the other things.

But when we allow that to happen, we end up feeling dull and stagnant. And that feeling ends up snowballing. So here are 5 ways to try something new, using our 5 senses, to combat feeling like a big snowball of dull.

  • Listen to something new – The internet abounds with free stuff to listen too. Try a new podcast or music station. If you haven’t heard country in a while, give it a try. Never been a fan of classical? Try some piano. I use Spotify for my work with preschoolers so their suggestions for me are a bit odd but I have found some good ones.
  • Taste New Foods – Any time is a great time to up your cooking skills and try new things but it’s especially important now to social distance. So open up your browser, put in recipe and the ingredients you have on hand and see what happens. We did this the other day as we had bacon that needed to be used. My husband made Carbonara – bacon with pasta and egg. Fabulous.
  • Smell New Scents- C’mon. Admit it. You have candles you never burn. It’s just you at home. Candles are for company. Or you just don’t want to get up and find the lighter. Next time you are at the store pick up a package of lighters and keep them on each floor. Before you sit down to read or watch TV light the candle. It will elevate whatever you are doing into something better.
  • Feel Like You are Wearing Something New – You don’t have to spend money to wear something new. Shop your closet. Try combining things that you have never put together before. Take the things that still have tags on them and move them to wear you will see them. Find the things that make you feel good when you wear them and put them where you can easily find them. A lot of my lounging clothes were rescued from my son’s donation bags. Charity began with his Momma. But don’t worry. I added more to his bags from my closet than I took.
  •  Look at Something New by Clearing the Clutter – Speaking of cleaning stuff out, I cleaned the closet in our bathroom. It was like a breath of fresh air. I kept finding reasons to go into that closet. And then I quit finding reasons and just went and looked at it.

Follow your senses. Move on from the dull and try something new. Some of the things will work and some won’t. And I’m sure my closet will get cluttered again. But every time I do something other than what I have always done I will melt a little of that snowball of dull.
